A musical audiobook for children has been released by The Opera Story, an opera company committed to providing a platform for emerging composers and young performers.

Dewi in the Deep is a story about the environment and follows the journey of an eight-year-old girl of Indonesian heritage as she discovers the impacts of global warming, plastic pollution and overfishing on the ocean.

Written and scored by Lucie Treacher and Joaquim Badia, the audiobook and illustrated booklet are available for £7.

The music is performed by Orchestra for the Earth under John Warner, and the accompanying booklet was illustrated by Flora Mackay.

Hamish Mackay, artistic director at The Opera Story, said: ‘A child's imagination is one of the most incredible things in life. Dewi in the Deep is an audiobook that encourages the use of imagination through the story, music and illustrations, while engaging in one of the most important and pressing issues that we currently live with.

‘The arts are a fantastic way to allow people to engage with important issues, and we believe that Dewi will educate and positively affect many, many children (and possibly even their parents).’

He added: ‘Our aim is to engage and entertain. We hope that families and schools will be able to use it in both an educational and recreational way. It's fun, it's catchy and there's something for everyone.’
