Music Mark column: supporting the Curriculum and Assessment Review

The Labour government's Curriculum and Assessment Review is a gateway for the arts to regain equal standing in schools. But it is a balancing act, and pressure needs to be applied by Ofsted and by students and their carers too, claims Music Mark

For there to be an effective education in every school, three things need to align: the curriculum (design and delivery); assessment (of the curriculum); inspection (of the curriculum).

One of the first things the Department for Education (DfE) enacted following the change of government in 2024 was to launch a Curriculum and Assessment Review (CAR). While it was made clear that this review would see ‘evolution not revolution’, it will see a significant change for many, particularly in secondary schools, as recommendations will apply to all state schools including maintained, academies and free schools.

This has the potential to rebalance the curriculum offer in some schools that have previously been able to argue the case for their interpretation of a ‘broad and balanced curriculum’ which may not have included music and/or other arts subjects.
