Taking a theme, motif or chord progression and finding ways to vary it has always been a foundation of composition, and it’s not just in ‘classical’ music that we find examples – variations can change the mood in folk ballads, provide energy in dance genres and embellish a raga in Indian classical music. Here, we concentrate on two major ways in which Western classical composers did it: ground bass and theme and variations.
