Arts Council England publishes new music guide for school governing boards

A new guide has been published to help school governing boards in England ensure that all children have access to a high quality music education.
The Music guide is part of a collection of refreshed documents published by Arts Council England (ACE) – the others covering Arts, culture and creativity; Art, craft and design; and Dance.
In his foreword, ACE chief executive Dr Darren Henley OBE says: ‘The value of creative education in the lives of our young people – and the important role that subjects such as art and design, dance, drama and music have to play alongside English, maths and science – has never been more apparent as we begin to recover from the educational, social and health impacts of COVID-19.
‘Now, as we begin to consider post-pandemic life, we need to ensure that high quality cultural education opportunities are available to every child, no matter what their background. These opportunities should be both formal and informal, in the classroom as part of a broad and balanced curriculum, and outside the classroom too. This is a matter of fairness and opportunity for all children.’

Alongside the foreword and introduction, the 13-page guide consists of sections covering ‘The characteristics of high quality music provision’, ‘How to influence music education in your school’, ‘How to monitor progress, outcomes, and impact’, and further information and support.
Within the guide, the recently published Model Music Curriculum (MMC) is described as offering 'guidance and ideas' on how the national curriculum can be delivered and providing a 'springboard' from which to approach teaching music.
