The National Centre for Early Music (NCEM) is launching a digital workshop Inspiration Day this weekend, providing activities for families with primary aged children with any degree of deafness.

The workshop is part of NCEM and Music and the Deaf’s successful I Can Play! Project, which has been providing support for D/deaf young people.

Funded by the Peter Sowerby Foundation, the digital I Can Play Inspiration Day is taking place on 19 June via Zoom, and promises to provide families and D/deaf primary aged children with plenty of musical fun.

Music leaders will guide children through activities throughout the morning workshop, where there will be opportunities to communicate with them and other participants. An interpreter will be present throughout the session. Later on, a Q&A session will take place where families and children can speak to NCEM’s practitioners. Finally, the day of activities will end with a concert, featuring inspiring performances from D/deaf musicians.

NCEM’s participation and learning manager Lottie Brooke said: ‘We feel that this event embodies I Can Play! really. Encouraging children to make music at the start of the day, showing them D/deaf role models in the middle of the day, and then showing children what they could achieve if they pursue a career in music in the afternoon.’

‘We are really excited about it! We thought the Q&A would be beneficial for parents, or even for music teachers who want to know more about the benefits of music making with deaf children.’

The I Can Play! project is part of the NCEM’s Youth Music funded Music4U programme, helping D/deaf children to access music-making opportunities in York, Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire.
