National Youth Orchestras of Scotland (NYOS) has announced that musicians aged 8-25 can now apply for its classical and jazz courses in 2022.

Auditions are free and the Scottish youth orchestra has confirmed that the six courses for a range of abilities will take place in person from next year.

To be eligible for an audition, submitted via video, young musicians must be born in Scotland, living in Scotland, studying in Scotland, or have Scottish family.

Applications close on 28 September, and the ensembles taking new members are NYOS Junior, Senior and Symphony Orchestras, and Jazz Access, Jazz Summer School and Jazz Orchestra.

The five-day courses for each ensemble run in spring and summer, and bursaries are available for those unable to cover the costs.

In partnership with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the NYOS Symphony Orchestra will perform Ravel, Prokofiev, and Shostakovich, conducted by Kerem Hasan and Jac van Steen, and joined by guest soloist Jess Gillam. Information about repertoire and engagements for the other ensembles is also available online.

NYOS provides guidelines on its website for the appropriate standard of playing, but says that ‘qualification is a guide only’ and is ‘not essential’.
