In partnership with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra (NYP), Psappha is bringing a new young composers scheme to British students.

The NYP launched the Very Young Composer Scheme 25 years ago for children with no prior experience or musical training. Since then it has successfully been taken up in Finland, Hong Kong, South Korea and China.

In collaboration with Psappha, the programme will initially be rolled out in the UK to schools in Knowsley and Sefton in April.

Psappha is the North West of the UK’s only stand-alone professional contemporary classical music ensemble. The new scheme builds on Psappha Kids - an online resource for children from Key Stage 2.

In addition to work with students, over the past 10 years Psappha’s Composing For… programme has provided emerging composers with expert training.

Psappha takes its name from the composition of the same name by Greek modernist composer Iannis Xenakis. The ensemble has a core instrumentation of flute, clarinet, piano, percussion, violin, viola and cello.
