Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra (BSO) has launched a new nationwide competition for amateur instrumentalists.

The Lark Music-Making Competition, launched by BSO in partnership with Lark Music Insurance, invites musicians aged 18 and over, of any genre, instrument, or ability, to submit a solo performance of up to three minutes inspired by birds or birdsong. The performance can be a personal interpretation of an existing piece or an original composition.

There are three categories:

  • 18–24 years
  • 25–39 years
  • 40+ years

The winner of each will receive £1,000. In addition, all finalists will receive a subscription (worth £170) to BSO’s 2025/26 Digital Concert series.

Entries will be judged by a panel of musicians, broadcasters, and industry professionals, including BBC Radio 3’s Tom Service, violinist Tania Davis, producer Chris Caton, and BSO musicians including principal cello Jesper Svedberg and conductor Enyi Okpara. Judges will be looking for originality, creativity and musicality, regardless of recording quality.

‘This is all about personality, expression and joy in music-making,’ said Lucy Warren, BSO Joint Head of Participate and competition judge. ‘Whether it’s classical, jazz, or something entirely new – we want to hear your voice through your music.’

Entry is free; the closing date is 11:59pm on Wednesday 25 June via bsolive.com/Lark.
