BBC presenter Owain Wyn Evans undertakes 24-hour drumathon for Children in Need

Owain Wyn Evans, BBC North West Tonight’s weather presenter, has agreed to drum constantly for 24 hours to raise money for Children in Need. 

Evans’ challenge will start at 8.35am on 12 November, and end 24 hours later, starting and finishing on the BBC One Breakfast programme. The challenge will also be available to watch for 24 hours on BBC iPlayer.

Musicians from across the UK are encouraged to join the BBC Breakfast Drumathon; celebrity drummers will feature throughout the drumathon to perform with Evans, including percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie, Mark Richardson (Skunk Anansie, Feeder), Al Murray (The Pub Landlord) and Nicko McBrain (Iron Maiden).

At 6.55pm on 12 November, BBC One will host a special performance for Owain’s Big Bang, where everyone across the country is encouraged to beat whatever instruments they have, including pots, pans, bin lids or cardboard boxes. Evans will be leading the collaborative performance of the BBC News theme tune with an ensemble of 50 drummers.  

Evans says: ‘I absolutely love drumming! Over the years it’s helped me so much, it eases my anxiety and brings me so much joy! That’s why I’ve accepted this mammoth challenge. I want to help change the perception of who can be a drummer, and support all of the amazing charities and groups that BBC Children in Need helps.’

Professor Marcus Smith says: 'The magnitude of what Owain is about to undertake cannot be overstated. Not only is there the physical requirement to play the drums for 24-hours but also the cognitive challenge of conducting meaningful interviews and conversations with world leading drummers and guests. For me, that is what makes this challenge so unique. Preparations are going very well and I am confident, given support from the public, that Owain will rise to the challenge.’
