Ensemble of the Year 2022

Returning for 2023, Scottish Young Musicians (SYM) – the leading festival of music competitions in Scotland – has opened entries for this year’s Solo Performer of the Year and Ensemble of the Year competitions.

All young musicians who go to school in Scotland can compete to be Solo Performer of the Year. A higher number of local authorities will be taking part in 2023 than in previous years; each area will select their best local soloist to compete at the national final, which will be held on 21 May at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Finalists and their parent/guardian will receive travel expenses and accommodation if needed.

Ensemble of the Year is an online competition open to groups of three to 12 players of any genre. The ensembles must play together regularly from a recognised music organisation or school, and one ensemble must be selected to represent each local authority. The winning ensemble will be awarded the title of Ensemble of the Year and a cash prize to further their musical experiences.

Alan Kerr, chair of Scottish Young Musicians, said: ‘After a fantastic start in 2022, we’re excited to bring back Scotland’s national festival of music competitions with more local authorities taking part and an ensemble competition open to all kinds of instruments.

‘We’re delighted to be able to offer young people across Scotland the opportunity to grow in confidence, level up their skills, meet other young musicians and win big prizes!’

The competition winners will receive a trophy designed by Alexander Stoddart, and finalists will get the chance to win cash prizes, coaching, recording sessions and meet-and-greets with Scotland’s top music institutions, among other prizes.

The deadline for entries is 31 March 2023.
