Violin Sheet Music Reviews: Fiddle Time Joggers

If you teach violin, it is likely you will know the contents of Fiddle Time Joggers like the back of your bowing hand. It is the first book in the popular ‘String Time’ series by Kathy and David Blackwell and is objectively one of the most comprehensive starter string books available.

With a strong mix of original and traditional tunes, the book starts with open strings and progresses to the use of third and fourth fingers. Many of the tunes, such as ‘Tip Toe Boo’ and the call and response song ‘Copy Cat’ use phrases and chants to help with musical concepts. Themes of space, cowboys, cars, and monsters come to life with colourful illustrations on each page.

The recently released third edition contains the same high-spirited and imaginative tunes of previous editions, bar three new pieces: two jaunty traditional folk tunes and an original duet titled ‘Cooking in the Kitchen’.

The new printed edition also comes with an access code to download or stream play-along tracks and backing tracks, adding a new and enjoyable dimension to practice. Downloading is straightforward, although you do have to make an account with Oxford University Press. The audio sounds clear and easy to hear while playing along; the backing tracks are musical with realistic piano sounds, pretty string accompaniments, and entertaining sound effects. Tuning notes and slowed down backing tracks are also downloadable for some of the more advanced pieces, giving students the ability to practise in a smarter way outside of the lesson.

In addition to piano accompaniment, a violin accompaniment book is now available. This is not only convenient while teaching face-to-face but can be useful for teachers who do not play the piano or have access to one. The violin accompaniment book covers all the tunes and can be used to play duets with students or for more advanced students to play the bottom line. All in all, the third edition is a good update to an already great teaching tool.
