#CanDoMusic is a UK-wide project that aims to ensure all children and young people can access musical learning in school. It was created in August 2020 by three national membership organisations – the Music Teachers' Association (MTA), the Independent Society of Musicians (ISM) and the UK Association for Music Education (Music Mark) – who came together in partnership to support music delivery. United in their vision, these organisations want every child and young person to be able to access quality musical education in school. The creation of #CanDoMusic was a direct response to the Covid-19 pandemic, which reduced the number of children and young people accessing music education.

This year the three organisations have come together again. #CanDoMusic has now evolved, becoming a lasting and transformative initiative that continues to celebrate, inspire and elevate music education in schools. The partnership between ISM, MTA, and Music Mark positions the #CanDoMusic website as the go-to place for educators seeking a wealth of blogs and resources to enhance their classroom teaching.

candomusic.org, which compiles the best materials, is a comprehensive repository that reflects the diversity of expertise across the UK. Its mission is to celebrate and unlock the innovation of music teachers and senior leaders, to share practical ideas, blogs and resources to deliver music in engaging and inspiring new ways. The #CanDoMusic website has been revamped and the resources have been updated to support you to deliver excellent music education in 2024 and beyond.

Abi Marrison, Music Mark's schools lead, shared some insights on the re-launch of #CanDoMusic:

What can we expect to see from #CanDoMusic in 2024?

AM: There is a wealth of expertise across the UK supporting quality music delivery for children and young people, and we are excited to launch #CanDoMusic, a one-stop shop for teachers to search for inspiration, support and reassurance.

Why should teachers be using #CanDoMusic resources?

AM: On the website you will find a mix of old and new; you may find your ‘go-to’ resource or rediscover an old, trusted favourite. We will regularly add resources and blogs that support you with the most pressing issues, such as wellbeing, diversity, inclusion and sustainability. New blogs are added every term, spanning a range of issues and stages of education.

How can I get involved?

AM: Head to candomusic.org to see our fresh new look. Here, you can find practical resources, guidance and support to advocate for music as a valued part of your education offer. Use the social media hashtag #CanDoMusic to respond and share your reflections. #CanDoMusic would love to hear from you. You may want to inspire other music teachers by sharing your favourite resource that isn't featured, or write your own blog post about how a technique or resource has enhanced your delivery of music lessons.
